Book Review – Microsoft System Center 2012 Configuration Manager: Administration Cookbook Posted: 12 Dec 2012 10:12 AM PST Over the years, I have read many books about Systems Management Server (SMS), and Configuration Manager (CM). Most of them have been focussed on preparing readers for the relevant Microsoft certification exam or theoretical explanations of how the system works and how to configure it for basic functionality. These types of publications are great for new users of products looking to get a basic working knowledge of CM. This book is different. It I written by professionals who have years of in depth experience with the technology in some extreme use case scenarios. This background gives them some rather distinctive perspectives on how to get more out of a CM infrastructure. Whereas traditional books on the subject focus on the "What" and the "How", Brian and Greg also include the "Why". For example, they include decision making frameworks that help the reader decide what is best for their particular implementation, use case scenarios, and other objectives. In situations where the best practice might prove impractical, they provide rationale for making trade-offs (E.g. budget vs. performance, Application Catalog vs. Software Center). CM is a complex product. Each of its modules could easily be a product in itself. There are dozens of point solution products aimed specifically at a sub feature of CM. As such, this book is not targeted at somebody who is new to the technology. There aren't a lot of pages spent on how to install the software or the basic functionality. Rather, the writers assume a basic understanding of the feature set (easily obtained form on of the dozen or so traditional books available on the subject) and provides a series of in depth modules intended to help a generalist administrator get more out of a specific feature as the need arises. The organization of the book into a series of recipe cards lends itself to be easily consumed. You don't need to read it cover to cover. You can jump right in to the topic that you currently need to learn more about. Each topic is organized into the following sections:
This recipe book firmly establishes Greg and Brian as CM Iron Chefs. I will be recommending this book to all of my customers. Buy it directly from Packt Publishing. Full disclosure: I have met both Brian Mason and Greg Ramsey multiple times. They did not approach me to review this book. I was asked by the publisher to review this book. As a token of their appreciation once my review is completed, I will receive a free eBook from Packt Publishing. |
Posted: 11 Dec 2012 02:53 PM PST December 2, 2012: The realization dawns that The Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon – 2013 is just six weeks away and I have a long distance to travel… literally and figuratively. Start at 7 am: Mega Mall, mangrove belt at Millat Nagar, Lokhandwala Back Road, Four Bungalows, and soon on to Juhu Beach. Realise that the Endomondo Sports tracker had paused inadvertently at 45 min when I had already done 1hr 30min. I decide to not bother about the tracker, and do my own thing. The whole experience had to spell 'FUN'! Once that aim was clear, it followed that small breaks to take a moment to pat a plump puppy, admire flowers or take a photo were all adding to the experience. The run had to be FUN. 21°Celsius, cool shade, sun just after dawn. Nostrils flare to take in the air in easy deep breaths, feel the hollow in your stomach, chest up, chin held high, endorphins had started to work their magic and a feeling of well being was bound to envelope me. I decide to stop briefly at a teashop catering to the 'Mango People'. Hear the order for a 'pure' chai being shouted out. The serving was in a cup and saucer instead of the normal glass which I would have preferred. I see an artisan with his grinding wheel on a cycle happily putting an edge to kitchen knives. A car is as strong as the weakest link in the chain of power transmission: engine-clutch-gears-propeller shafts-differential-tyres. All will keep going as long as they work in fine synchronization. The comparison with the body is apt; power generated: muscles-hip-thigh-knee-calf-ankle-feet. While running, I listen to/feel for the first sign of any elements in the chain talking to me. Last year, it was a spot near the knee, later the calf, more recently the ankle or chafing under the arms. During the previous run, it was the ball of the foot which heated up due to friction. Must remember that you can proceed only after attending to the element raising its voice to be noticed and heard. Today was a good day, all elements in fine fettle. Maybe because Sukhwinder was keeping me company. "Titli daboch li maine … Chin amma, chin kumma …". Last night, I had watched a talent show; this song had remained in the subconscious. Spirits were uplifted. When I bid good bye to Sukhwinder, the mind was bereft of thought for some time. Soon realized the possible dangerous portents!! In keeping with the "Always a first time" theme, I start thinking of covering the distance from Lucknow to Allahabad on a cycle in a day. 200kms would be a stretch. I don't think I would have any company, maybe someone would decide to go along in a car. In the next few minutes the time schedule, menu, clothing to be worn, season (had to be between November to February, the coolest months) had all been worked out in my mind. Saw a hoarding of "BIG SIZE Shirts, Trousers.. Available". Just above: "The Answer Lies Within"! It usually does… Back home after a run of 2hr 45 min, maybe 19 km done. A steaming bowl of oats later, I was offered a choice between poha and halwa. The latter won hands down!!! |
SCCM Task Sequence rebuild not adding computer back into AD Posted: 11 Dec 2012 03:22 AM PST Overview: I am trying to image a computer and it is not joining the 'Contoso' domain Resolution: Reset the FQN for each renamed OU in the MDT DataBase. The task sequence references the MDT database during the step. |
SCCM "Closing the allow unknown computer support to take control" Posted: 11 Dec 2012 01:10 AM PST Applies To: System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R2, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R3 Unknown computer support is an operating system deployment feature in Configuration Manager 2007 R2 that allows unmanaged systems to be discovered and receive operating system deployment. ~But why is it showing up in my SCCM task sequence? … This is not an error, it was an informational message just saying that the Task Sequence Availability Checker did not need to add the machine to a collection for task sequences to be available at the next step. This is because we have advertised the task sequences to the unknown computer collections. Any machines that boot up and request task sequences that do not have a record in SCCM will be able to start running one of those advertised task sequences. We are using non-integrated WDS which means we can't use the unknown computer support on PXE service points. However, the issue here isn't to do with unknown computer support anyway, it's to do with known computers and task sequences not being available to them. That's why we created the task sequence checker tool to add machines to the right collection at boot time. Advertising task sequences without mandatory schedules to all machines is out of the question, it would take just one person to think "that task sequence didn't run on that computer properly, I know I'll right click and rerun on the advertisement" to rebuild every machine in the company! Obvious no no. |
