DreamWorks Data Center: Where Creativity and IT Efficiency Coexist

Posted: 19 Oct 2012 09:20 AM PDT

DreamWorks SKG truly is a production factory for some of the most popular digitally animated movies in history, including the "Shrek" series, the "Wallace & Gromit" series, and "Kung Fu Panda." It is a perfect example of imagination combined with information technology to create products that are beloved in more than 100 markets around the world. Here's what goes on at DreamWorks. The studio produces three animated movies per year at a total cost of around $1 billion in production, marketing and promotional efforts. Scheduling is hyper-important; at any given time, eight to 10 films are in various stages of production. About 2,500 people, spread over California, India and various other parts of the world, are contributing to DreamWorks projects at various times. Each film is about 90 minutes long, runs at 24 frames per second and requires roughly 120,000 hand-crafted frames per movie. As many as 20 to 50 people may work on each frame at one time or another. The scale at which DreamWorks performs is pretty astounding. The studio's newest movie, "Rise of the Guardians," will be released Thanksgiving weekend in the U.S. This slide show presents a tour on Oct. 17, 2012, of the company's Redwood City, Calif., data center, where the studio's animated productions are processed and stored.
