IBM's New Mainframe: 10 Reasons Why the zEnterprise EC12 Rocks Posted: 28 Aug 2012 11:44 AM PDT IBM has rolled out a new mainframe system, the zEnterprise EC12 mainframe server. Big Blue calls its new mainframe the most powerful and technologically advanced version of an IBM system that has been the linchpin of enterprise computing for 48 years. The new enterprise system, unveiled Aug. 28, features technologies that demonstrate IBMs ongoing commitment to meet the growing need to secure and manage critical information with the System z mainframe, David Balog, IBMs general manager for System z, told eWEEK. "The new system has 25 percent more performance and 50 percent more capacity than its predecessor," he said. The IBM zEC12 enterprise system is the result of an investment by IBM Systems and Technology Group (STG) of more than $1 billion in research and development, primarily in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., as well as 17 other IBM labs around the world and in collaboration with some of IBM's top clients, Balog said. The new IBM mainframe is one of the most secure enterprise systems ever, with built-in security features designed to meet the security and compliance requirements of different industries, he said. With operational analytics and near-real-time workload monitoring and analysis, clients can use the new zEC12 for a variety of workloads leveraging the worlds fastest chip running at 5.5 GHz, IBM said. This slide show looks at 10 key features of the new system. - ... |

This isn't another Vista. It's more like a tablet-friendly Windows 7 with tiles. - For some companies, the coming of Windows 8 is a non-event. Theyre still running Windows XP, regardless of the lack of support, security issues and the never-ending stability problems. But for many companies, security is important and so is performance. And not every company plans to keep using its ... | Window 8 Evaluation: Demystifying the New Tiled Interface Posted: 27 Aug 2012 12:10 PM PDT The first time you run Windows 8, youll likely feel intimidated by the unfamiliar interface and the changes in how it works. But its not that hard to get used to it, and it doesnt take much to set up the Windows desktop look and feel that you are familiar with. The the tiled interface of Windows 8 is designed for tablet computers, and if you have one of those or if your notebook or ultrabook computer has a multi-touch pointing surface, then using Windows 8 is easy and intuitive. But if youre installing Windows 8 on a machine for evaluation, chances are you wont have that. Instead, youll have a keyboard and mouse. Fortunately, that works just fine as well. Microsoft kept the Windows desktop and it looks very much like what youre used to seeing with Windows 7. One potential issue is that right now there doesnt appear to be a way to boot directly to the desktop, but that may change by the time Windows 8 is released in October. Meanwhile, this eWEEK slide show will help demystify the installation process and the new look for Windows 8. - ... | Eric Schloss wrote a new post, MDT Queries and Stored Procedure Calls with No Results Cause Errors in the MDT Logs Posted: 27 Aug 2012 11:31 AM PDT If you issue a query or stored procedure call from MDT using the built in method of specifying parameters in the CustomSettings.ini, and no results are returned, then the number of results is reported at -1 and an […] Comments: 0 | AMD Using VMworld to Launch Renewed Server Chip Push Posted: 27 Aug 2012 11:27 AM PDT A focused marketing effort targeting cloud, virtualization and big data and a heterogeneous computing push are part of AMD's larger bid to solidify its footing in the space. - Advanced Micro Devices shook up the server chip space in 2003 when officials unveiled the first Opterons, x86-based processors that could run both 32- and 64-bit applications and offered an integrated memory controller, among other features.
