Invalid Software Updates in the SCCM 2007 Administrator Console

Posted: 16 Jan 2013 05:23 PM PST

Recently, I was contacted by our networking team about increased traffic over port 8530 that was affecting business. After doing research and posting on forums, I was not able to find the cause. Since the problem was occurring at sites connected to two of my child primaries but not all the child primaries, I did not focus my investigation on the central server.  After failing to find the cause on the two child primaries, I decided to examine the central server again. I expanded Software Updates and noticed that most of my authorized updates were marked as invalid (red arrow). They were also listed as deployed but not downloaded. This pointed me in the right direction. I remembered an SCCM hotfix that addressed this problem. I contacted Microsoft to confirm that this would address my problem and they agreed. I also learned that the increased traffic over port 8530 was caused by a corrupt WSUS catalog. The software update scans were failing because of the corrupt catalog. After each failed scan, the client would try to download the catalog again which created the increased traffic. Below are the steps that I performed.

  1. Ensured that WSUS update (KB2783466) was installed on all my SCCM servers with WSUS installed. (Note – Installing this update will require a download of all software updates again. The instructions in the article must be followed.)
  2. Installed KB2734608.
  3. Downloaded all invalid updates again and distributed the package to all DPs.
  4. Confirmed that software updates were installing again and that the increase of traffic on port 8530 had stopped.
